North Carolina Central University is preparing to celebrate 100 years of existence with a lively combination of events and activities scheduled liberally throughout 13 months beginning June 2009 to July 2010.

For nearly a century since the June 30, 1909 signing of the Charter that brought the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race into being in Durham, NCCU has continued its mission to develop in its students the sound academic preparation and discipline required for meaningful service to the state, the nation, and the world.

Plans are coming together to welcome headliners to speak at NCCU’s convocations and commencements, and to develop commemorative print materials and artwork celebrating the history of the university in words and pictures. Of special interest is the creation of a Centennial quilt designed by NCCU alumna, fiber artist and graphic designer Erica King. The quilt will extend 12 feet wide by seven feet tall and depict each decade of the university’s life span in pictures. Photos of all buildings, past and present, will border the quilt and images of the university’s ten chief administrators will be displayed in the midsection with a depiction of founder James Edward Shepard at the center.
