North Carolina Central University Parent Guide
Welcome from the University College!
Dear NCCU Parents and Families: Welcome to North Carolina Central University!
While your child has been admitted to NCCU, he/she will spend time in the University College. If your student is a first-time freshman, the University College will be his/her home away from home for the next two years. However, if your child is a transfer student, he or she will spend the next eight weeks to one year with us.
The University College is designed and organized to provide effective, consistent, quality and appropriate academic advising, monitoring, mentoring, nurturing, and coaching to ensure his/her academic success. Your student’s academic success, however, is dependent on how well he/ she takes responsibility for his/her own education, including taking initiative to achieve academic excellence. We believe there is no reason why any student should make a grade below a “B” at NCCU because of all of the support services available. It is up to your student to take advantage of these services as soon as he/ she needs them and as often as needed. Your child taking responsibility for his/her actions is a sign of intellectual maturity.
To assist our students in transition to the University, they are each assigned an academic advisor to guide them through the process. Your student’s assigned advisor and other advisors in the University College will be available to him/her on a daily basis. Your child will be required to see the advisor at least once each week to sign–in, talk with the advisor, provide a writing sample, and a status report. In addition, your child’s advisor will receive a weekly progress report from each of his/her professors for the first eight weeks of classes. We want our students to be successful and we will do all that we can to ensure that success, but your student must do his/her part as well.
Further, all students will be required to sign a contract indicating what they need to do to be a successful and competent student, based on his/her placement tests and recommendations from high school counselors. Students will be asked to demonstrate mastery and competency in the following areas during his/her two years in the University College:
- Critical thinking, quantitative, and communication skills
- Liberal Arts, behavioral sciences, social sciences, and health and wellness
- Positive ethical and moral behaviors
- Civic, social, and personal responsibility - Goal setting and accomplishments
- Global Learning
- Teamwork, problem solving, and transference of knowledge
- General Education Vocabulary and technical skills
- Book reviews and presentations
- Community Service Learning
We challenge you to a world of wonder, amazement, and academic excellence. It is up to you to take the challenge as our parents are an important part of student success at North Carolina Central University.
Sincerely,
Bernice D. Johnson, Ph.D.
Dean, University College
