Web site
The NMSU Career Exploration Center can help your student with:
- Career planning
- Interest assessments
- Career information
- Information on majors
- Career counseling
Choosing a major
At NMSU all students must earn 38 hours of University General Education (UGE) credits. If students are undeclared, they can work on UGE credits while exploring classes that catch their interest. Students are encouraged to come to the Career Center to discuss career plans and how their major fits into those plans.
Career counseling
Our staff is available to answer questions regarding career planning and majors. Career Counselors listen, help clarify ideas, and aid in creating a plan that fits the individual student. Career counseling is free for NMSU students and confidential. All Students are invited to come into the Career Exploration Center and talk with a counselor.
Career Services
(575) 646-1631
Web site
NMSU’s Career Services office is committed to assisting students with their career planning and job goals. Career services supports students individually through a directed job search or through group participation in workshops, career fairs, or other activities. Through the career resource library, students have access to information related to job searches, employers, and job listings for all majors.
Appointments can be scheduled to discuss job-search strategies, review resumes and cover letters, and to conduct practice interviews.
You can also find information about Student Employment. Various positions (part-time student, cooperative, and professional employment, as well as summer jobs/internships) are available on the website and at the office.
During the school year, CS sponsors and supports various fairs on campus. At these fairs, employers meet candidates for part-time jobs, internships, co-ops, and professional employment. These give your student excellent opportunities for interaction, information gathering, networking, and distributing or collecting resumes. The Career Services home page links to information about several job and career fairs, including:
Fall fairs
Career Expo, Corbett Center Ballrooms
Graduate and Professional School Fair, Corbett Center, 1st Floor
Spring fairs
Educators’ Job Fair, Corbett Center Student Union
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Fair, Corbett Center Ballrooms
Hospitality and Tourism Career Fair, Corbett Center Ballrooms
About two semesters before graduation, students are encouraged to build a file for prospective employers. The file, which contains a resume, transcripts, and references, is required for participation in professional on-campus interviewing. It is also used for referrals, when employers contact our office seeking candidates. Registrants who contact employers on their own may have credentials sent upon request. Students who establish employment files with Career Services can use MonsterTRAK, a comprehensive Internet resource for job seekers. In addition, each fall and spring semester, several hundred employers send recruiters to Career Services. On-campus recruiting is available to all students and alumni.
