The NMSU Counseling Center has licensed counselors and psychologists to assist students. The Center is open from 8 to 5 and offers scheduled appointments and evening groups. Services are free to NMSU students, are confidential, and can include individual counseling, group counseling, and crisis assistance

Eligibility for services

Students enrolled in 9 or more hours on the main campus are eligible for Counseling Center services free of charge.  This includes individual sessions, group participation, and full use of the Career Center services. Students enrolled in 6–8 credits on the main campus are eligible for up to five sessions. Students with fewer than six credits are eligible for up to three sessions.

Privacy and confidentiality

The state of New Mexico legally recognizes that communication between a counselor and his/her client is privileged and confidential. We will not disclose student contacts with us to spouses, parents, professors, etc. If a student is in imminent danger to self or poses a significant danger to someone else, the Center is obligated to break confidentiality to protect the student or others. The NMSU Counseling Center also reserves the right to consult with a treating physician at the NMSU Student Health center when appropriate.

The Wellness, Alcohol and Violence Education Program (WAVE) is a harm reduction program which educates students on issues of personal safety and well-being. WAVE’s Peer Educators provide students with information and strategies regarding alcohol use and the prevention of sexual assault and other forms of interpersonal violence.
