President's Message
The New Mexico House and Senate could not agree on a state budget, so legislators will be back in Santa Fe to try again during a special session. It was an intense 30-day session. Our legislative team led by Marc Saavedra did remarkably well in securing the best budget scenarios possible in this tough economy. I know it is a disappointment to them as it is to me that there is as yet no conclusion, but I believe we've helped make a strong case for UNM and for higher education and our efforts will not be forgotten during the special session. Encourage students to form healthy, fun connections through the Student Activities Center. Students who are active on campus are more marketable. Today's employer is looking for more than a good G.P.A. and campus involvement is a great place to start. Read More |

Parent Association News
By Maria Probasco, President, UNM Parent Association
I would like to focus on the subject of scholarships in my news to you this month. After having two children complete college with the third graduating in May, I know first hand how expensive it can become for families supporting their children in their educational endeavors. The cost of books alone is enough to break the bank not to mention room and board, personal expenses, and student fees. Read More |

Parent Talk: Undergraduate research prepares students for scholarships, professions
By Laurie Mellas, Parent Relations Office, Senior Program Manager
A "well-rounded" education is assured with substantial effort put forth by faculty, staff and students. In addition to the hundreds of student organizations offering "life experiences," UNM is widely known in academic circles for providing hands-on research opportunities for students as early as freshman year. Marla Wyche-Hall of UNM's University College notes that regardless of a student's area of interest, whether theater or mathematics, they have an opportunity to shine during the University College's Research Quest (for freshman only) and the Undergraduate Research and Creativity Conference. Both events motivate students to engage in peer-reviewed research. Read More |
