Ohio University Parent Guide
Residential Housing
The Department of Residential Housing coordinates and manages the on-campus living environment for students. These responsibilities include:
- administration of the Housing/Dining Contract
- Bobcat Cash
- assessment of room and board charges
- management of residence hall staff
- supporting the educational goals of the student and University
- promoting community living
- fostering the development of individuals and groups within the living environment
- providing support and information to residents.
As a residential campus, Ohio University requires first and second year students to live in on-campus residence halls. The Department of Residential Housing is responsible for all programmatic efforts within the residence halls which become centers for academic, social, cultural, and recreational activities.
The residential system is comprised of 42 halls, which house nearly 8,000 students. New and returning students must complete an annual contract for housing and dining services which is binding for the entire academic year.
Various living environments are available which promote opportunities for engagement and learning. First year students are assigned housing and returning students are permitted to select from available spaces for the next academic year.
It is important to us that students learn how to effectively handle situations that they will encounter both inside and outside the classroom. While you as the parent should continue to provide support and assistance, we hope that you will encourage your student to be a self advocate by discussing issues of concern with us directly, so that we can help them learn how to make choices and decisions that can affect their daily living.
Students should expect to be treated with respect and courtesy during all interactions with professional staff members. We in turn, request the opportunity to help your student grow and mature.
