Center for Academic Resources

Funded primarily by student differential tuition fees, the Center for Academic Resources (CAR), located in Student Success Center 102, provides free tutoring for undergraduate students. There are no eligibility requirements. Students can receive individual tutoring for almost every course on campus.

For students in large, challenging classes, CAR also provides a group tutoring program called Supplemental Instruction (SI). As an alternative to one-on-one tutoring, SI offers students three hours of prepared group review sessions each week of the semester. Students can attend as many SI sessions as they want, including special exam reviews prior to major tests in the course.

A third service is English assistance. Students for whom English is a second or non-native language often want to build their English skills, and they can schedule individual appointments with the professional English language tutor in CAR.  Together, they can work on general or course-specific vocabulary, pronunciation and oral presentations, English grammar and textbook reading.

Self-help resources also are available, including learning strategy packets, lending library and online links.

In addition, students are encouraged to register for any of the following one-credit, seven-week courses: Intrdscp. 125: Comprehensive Study Skills and Intrdscp. 169: College Reading Strategies.

Writing Center

Writing is one of the key skills college students must develop. Course assignments give some opportunity to develop this important skill, but the most successful students find additional ways to hone their writing.

The Writing Center offers free, confidential tutoring in writing to all UW Oshkosh students. Staffed by undergraduate peer tutors and a graduate student intern, the Writing Center helps writers of all levels work through their writing processes. During one-on-one tutorials, trained tutors provide informed, critical feedback of students’ work. Tutors and students work together on specific writing issues.

The Writing Center is administered and partially funded through the English department and the College of Letters and Science; it also is funded through Differential Tuition, a student-based program developed in conjunction with the UW Oshkosh Student Compact.
