The University of Oklahoma is committed to the safety, health and well-being of students, faculty and staff. OU has zero tolerance for violence on campus as well as other inappropriate behaviors, which include but are not limited to threats, bullying, and harassment.
University of Oklahoma staff members, from the university police to the landscaping department, are dedicated to creating a safe and secure environment. Landscaping is designed and maintained to minimize concealment and complement campus lighting.
Students are encouraged to take advantage of Safewalk, an on-campus escort service, and the reliable trolley system for safer travel after dark. Outdoor emergency blue telephones are located throughout the academic and housing areas.
Additionally, the university offers Saferide, a free taxi transportation service. Saferide provides a student a ride home any place within the Norman city limits from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday when classes are in session.
Police services for the university community are provided by the OU Police Department. Officers with OUPD are state certified, fully empowered law enforcement professionals.
Officers are on duty 24-hours a day year-round, and response time to emergencies on campus is usually under five minutes.
Visiting hours at the residence centers are enforced by the resident advisers and uniformed OUPD community service officers. These community service officers are on duty in the centers all night and patrol the hallways, public spaces and adjacent parking areas. Outside doors and internal security doors are locked by 10 p.m. every night, and visitors must be admitted by residents.
Crime statistics for the Norman campus are published annually in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, available at most public libraries. OU’s crime rate compares favorably with other demographically similar institutions.
Annual statistical reports and campus safety programs are summarized in the Sooner Safety report published each October by OU, it is available on the OU Web site. Individual copies are available year-round to the public and can be obtained by contacting OUPD. The University of Oklahoma has an Emergency Communication System that allows the university to contact students, faculty and staff with precautionary information and guidelines for critical campus incidents. ECS automatically transmits messages by multimedia sources to home phones, office phones and cell phones via text messaging, email and instant messaging.
ECS requires that students, faculty and staff keep their contact information current by regularly checking and updating it at account.ou.edu. Additionally, the University of Oklahoma has a committee of top-level administrators that meets monthly, or on an as-needed basis, to review any concern brought to the committee. This committee assists in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment.
Parents can make the university’s efforts more productive by encouraging their students to participate in crime prevention and personal safety programs; to mark their property; to use available security equipment; and to promptly report suspicious persons, vehicles or activity to the university police.
