Academic Advising at Rochester

Freshmen are assigned to pre-major advisors who remain with them formally until the end of the sophomore year, or earlier if the student is accepted into a major. Students are assigned a faculty advisor from the major department when they are admitted into the major, usually during the sophomore or beginning of the junior year. Students intending engineering majors stay with their advisors throughout the four years.

Academic advising and mentoring is one of the most important pieces to a student’s academic success at Rochester. Advisors start working closely with students almost immediately. An advisor’s goal is to help students succeed by offering both guidance and mentoring as new students learn to navigate college life.

An advisor signs off on all academic decisions made by a student through the end of the sophomore year, unless the student is already accepted into a major. The core advisor-student interactions are conversations about the student’s goals, objectives, qualities, and pursuits.
