Selecting a major

Posted in

Some students know exactly what to major in at the point of college enrollment. However, for the majority of students, college is a time to explore and test out interests; identify individual strengths; and expand exposure to new fields and disciplines before selecting a major.

It is quite normal for students to be uncertain about the choice of an academic major or career direction. According to ACT, 16% of first-year college students believe they will change their major. In actuality, it is estimated that between 65 and 80% of college freshmen change their majors, and many have not started their careers yet.

Most people spend 30-40 years working. As a result, career decision-making is a life-long process and your success depends on understanding the nature of jobs and careers; and understanding your unique needs, interests, abilities and values. Recent research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that people born in the years 1957 to 1964 held 10.2 jobs!

Rockford College’s liberal arts approach prepares students for a variety of majors and careers. These courses allow students the opportunity to learn about a broad range of ideals, backgrounds and disciplines. This broad-based knowledge increases employability and minimizes the need to retrain. Your student will be prepared for a change of career and the changing world…and our hope is they will change their world.
