The Honors Program hosts 4th Annual Student Leadership Conference

With over 160 students in attendance, the Tennessee State University Honors Program hosted its fourth annual Student Leadership Conference on February 19 - 20, 2010 with the theme, "Your Brand; Fact or Fiction." This year's conference was by far the best of all the previous conferences. The conference is the brainchild of Dr. William U. Latham who serves as the associate director of the honors program.

New students who have been accepted to Tennessee State University for fall 2010 are beginning a new and exciting chapter in their lives. Many opportunities to become the best they can be will be presented to them. For new students whose ACT/SAT scores place them in Developmental Studies courses, this is a unique opportunity to improve their placement before they begin classes in the fall. Academic Enrichment's Summer Success Institute, a non-residential, pre-college program, can provide an opportunity for them to attain higher placement plus an opportunity to complete some course work before school starts.

Exams are a time when stress levels are higher than usual. Many students feel stressed at exam time - having to revise a lot of information in a short amount of time and add to that not understanding course material can lead to added pressure. Some stress can be positive; helping your student stay motivated and focused. However, too much stress can be hurtful and unhealthy, making your student feel overwhelmed, confused, exhausted and edgy.

There are many ways parents can help their students manage exam stress, including those that not only improve their ability to perform on the tests, but also help them stay healthy in the process.

One of the first things parents can do to help their students through their exams is to make sure they don't wait until the last minute to prepare [link to article on procrastination]. Exam dates are typically set in the class syllabus and provided on the first day of class. Parents can help their student organize a schedule to stay on top of their work, and provide reminders throughout the semester to make sure they don't procrastinate.

It is time to get ready to celebrate! If your son or daughter is planning to walk in June 2010 Commencement ceremonies, then your graduate must reserve guest tickets for their ceremony beginning 9 a.m., April 12, through 5 p.m., April 16 via the ZotPortal. Tickets are free but must be reserved.

P&FA Breakfast with the Vice Chancellor Recap

UCI Parent & Family Association members joined Vice Chancellor Manuel Gómez, Associate Vice Chancellor Dan Dooros, and Dean of Students Rameen Talesh for P&FA's second annual Breakfast with the Vice Chancellor on Saturday, January 30 at the UCI Student Center. Parents had an opportunity to enjoy a wonderful meal, discuss key concerns and hear from Vice Chancellor Gómez.

Homecoming Adds Up to Victorious Fun

UC Irvine's 2010 Homecoming celebration on Saturday, Feb. 27, turned victorious when the Anteaters beat Cal State Northridge's Matadors. The annual Anteater get-together, which began in 2005 with 150 guests in the Bren Events Center's Koll Room, features a pregame street festival that has grown large enough to require closing Mesa Road. And last year - for the first time - UCI's Homecoming moved into the Twitterverse, with attendees tweeting from the event.

UC Students, Leaders Unite in Sacramento

UC administration and student leaders forged a united front in Sacramento when they joined forces to press lawmakers to fully fund the university and student financial aid.

“The students were on point, passionate advocates for the university system,” UC President Mark Yudof said after a day of joint meetings with legislators that culminated in a discussion with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. “I think together with the chancellors and regents, we were a formidable team and made our case.”

The message for the March 1 advocacy day was to fund UC's budget, fully support Cal Grants to keep up with rising fees and reinvest in the state's Master Plan for Higher Education.

Nearly 700 faculty and staff members packed the Graham Center ballrooms March 2 curious to hear what FIU's new branding campaign was all about. Those who'd been here for years seemed sure they'd be underwhelmed.

Then President Rosenberg asked the audience, "How many of you have heard FIWho?" Almost everyone raised their hands.

Campus Recreation

The Department of Campus Recreation at Florida Atlantic University is continuously bustling with students that are eager to get involved. There are numerous activities and programs that bring individuals back time after time. Currently, there are over 57 hours of Group Fitness programming available to our patrons. These classes range from cycling to pilates with class levels available for the beginner to the most advanced. Tabitha Diaz, a senior Elementary Education student, expressed her love for the classes and how convenient it is to workout between her studies. In addition to Group Fitness we provide Intramural Sports, which offer 7 tournaments and leagues each semester, over 30 Club Sport Organizations, and Personal Training.

Room Selection 2010

As the spring semester hits the halfway mark, the University begins to plan for Summer and Fall semesters. The Department of Housing and Residential Life is no exception.

During March 1-5, current residents can sign their 2010-2011 housing contracts. This process is online through a student's My FAU site. If your student does not currently live on campus, they can apply for housing by stopping by our office with a $200 deposit and signed contract.

WKU Achieves All 8 Goals Of Kentucky Plan

For the sixth straight year, Western Kentucky University has achieved continuing Degree Program Eligibility status based on the eight categories of the Kentucky Plan for Equal Opportunities by meeting the goals in all eight.



By surpassing the minimum level of successful achievement, WKU is automatically eligible to offer new degree programs. The report, which was presented today to the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE), is based on data from 2008-09 which showed that WKU successfully met all eight objectives.

When Ali Wright was considering her college choice, she had plenty of options close to her North Carolina home.

She chose Western Kentucky University because the Biology Department provides opportunities for incoming students to participate in hands-on research activities. "I wasn't sure I could have had that opportunity at a school back home," Wright said.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT-KADY LERCH

As a Junior I can look back and see that my relationship with my parents has changed greatly. When entering college my mother and father constantly checked up on me to make sure I was getting involved and making sure I was staying on task. At times I found this quite frustrating but things have gotten a lot better over the last few years. I can honestly say now that my parents are my biggest support system.  They have finally realized that I can be successful on my own and are proud of that!
