Tennessee State University Parent Guide
Summer Success Institute
New students who have been accepted to Tennessee State University for fall 2010 are beginning a new and exciting chapter in their lives. Many opportunities to become the best they can be will be presented to them. For new students whose ACT/SAT scores place them in Developmental Studies courses, this is a unique opportunity to improve their placement before they begin classes in the fall. Academic Enrichment's Summer Success Institute, a non-residential, pre-college program, can provide an opportunity for them to attain higher placement plus an opportunity to complete some course work before school starts.
The College Prep track of the Summer Success Institute offers an intensive five-week course for high school seniors who have been accepted to TSU for fall 2010 and who have ACT sub-scores less than 19 in math, English, and/or reading, or who have SAT sub-scores of less than 460 in math and/or English and/or a composite score of less than 900 in reading. At the end of the five-week course, incoming TSU freshmen may participate in placement testing to attempt to achieve higher placement, and then they will be registered for the fall semester.
First-time freshmen entering TSU Fall 2010 who participate in Summer Success have the option of participating in a seminar that may further reduce the developmental studies required when they begin the fall semester. If the student's placement requires enrollment in DSPS 0800, Learning Strategies, the student may elect to take the study skills seminar that meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This seminar is optional, but students who participate and pass the class will be exempt from DSPS 0800 when they begin the fall semester.
Applications for this year's institute will be accepted through May 1, 2010, and spaces or limited. The fee is only $40.00 the entire five-week program. The program will be in session May 28 - July 1. Summer Success Institute registration and orientation will be held on May 28, 2010. Parents are invited to attend the orientation session. This is not a residential program. Neither lodging nor meals can be provided. For more information, call (615) 963-5563 or 963-5521.
