The mission of the Financial Aid office at TSU is to inform students and parents about the various types of financial assistance available and assist them in securing the necessary financial resources to reach their educational aspirations. Financial Aid is designed to assist only, not fully fund, your student’s educational expenses. Student and family resources are contributing factors in the determination of aid eligibility.
TSU offers several types of aid including federal and state aid, scholarships, and federal work study. In the majority of cases, federal and state financial aid resources are not sufficient to meet a student’s expected cost of attendance. In order to receive financial aid, there are several key steps that need to be completed.
- Apply for admission and be accepted to attend Tennessee State University.
- Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Any university that participates in Federal Title IV financial aid programs will require the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Our school code is 003522. Keep this handy when filling out the FAFSA. Once the FAFSA is completed with Tennessee State University’s school code, we will receive the application information electronically.
- Submit any requested documentation to the Financial Aid office.
If any additional documentation is needed, a letter will be sent to the address that was reported on the Tennessee State Admissions Application or your FAFSA. This must be submitted before any financial aid can be awarded to your student.
- Accept award offer.
Once both the FAFSA and any requested documentation have been submitted, an award package will be offered. You will have 21 days to accept this award or it may be cancelled. Financial Aid will send an award notification that will allow you to accept/reject/partially accept the loan awards. If you are a first time borrower, you will be required to complete Loan Entrance Counseling and an electronic Promissory Note.
It is important to realize that in many cases, financial aid alone is not enough to cover all university expenses, especially for out of state students. We recommend that you start early and apply for any scholarships that you are eligible for. Do not wait until registration time to discover that you do not have adequate funding to cover tuition and fees. Contact Financial Aid early so they can help. If you have any questions, please contact the Financial Aid Office.
