We’re pleased to welcome more than 5,000 families of new students to the University of Minnesota this fall, and we welcome back the families of thousands more returning students. This year, freshmen and their families will share the exploration of campus and the community with a new U of M president and his wife, Eric and Karen Kaler.

As the 16th University of Minnesota president is inaugurated this September, we acknowledge the role of the family in supporting student success. Although the responsibility for academic achievement falls on the student, the transition to the University and on-going support is shared by the entire family. The University of Minnesota Parent Program is your link to campus, to help you understand the college experience, know about the resources for you and your student, and promote an appropriate role for parents in the University community.

We invite all families to come to campus for Parents Weekend on September 30 to October 2. Parents Weekend is designed to give family members a chance to spend time with their students while exploring campus and the community.

Parents Weekend is planned by a committee of students, led by Parents Weekend Coordinator, Emily Lammers. Take a look at the Parents Weekend schedule and check out the articles throughout this guide written by Emily and the coordinators, and register for the weekend before September 12th.

At any time during the year, when you have questions or concerns about your student, you’re encouraged to contact the University Parent Program. If you’re on campus, please stop by and visit us in 109 Appleby Hall. Although we may not be able to provide you with information related to your student’s academic records, we can work with you to guide your son or daughter through the college experience.

Once again, welcome to our community of parents and family members at the University of Minnesota.

Sincerely,

Marjorie Savage and Chelsea Petree
