I Wish I Would Have Known

Many people look back at college as one of the best times of their lives. Be sure to help your student make this statement true by encouraging him or her to explore and discover the possibilities the University of Minnesota provides to each and every one of its students.

Whether a first year student or an experienced senior, there are always going to be things your child wishes they would have known to make life a little easier!

I wish I would have known…

…how to work the bus system.  Whether it’s going from West Bank to East Bank or going downtown, the system is easy to operate and well worthwhile.

…joining a club in the beginning of the year is important. Not only will your student be involved on campus, but will also make friends right from the start.

…deciding on a major immediately isn’t required or even suggested. As a parent, you may feel the need to pressure your student into picking a major immediately, but allowing your son or daughter to explore their interests will make deciding on a major easier.

…which dining halls supply specialties. Residence hall restaurants all serve similar foods, but many offer special  meals on certain days.  When it comes to residence hall dining rooms there are many options available to students.

…approaching a professor isn’t as intimidating as it seems!  Let your student know that introducing himself or herself at the beginning of the semester and keeping a close relationship with the professor will only positively impact their educational experience.

…checking the U email account at least twice a day is crucial. Professors and University staff will often send emails throughout the day about homework assignments or special events occurring on campus.

…to do laundry before you absolutely need it, rather than when there are no clean clothes left! It will be important to teach your son or daughter how to do this chore so their white t-shirts don’t turn red the first week of school!

…doing homework even when it won’t be collected is important.  It’s up to the student to complete any optional homework assignments or attend extra review sessions so they can benefit from it.
