Union Glossary
Café Ozone: A popular student-run eatery featuring local, organic and vegetarian food
Common hour: 12:50-1:50 p.m. each day; no classes are held at this time
Concordy: Short for Concordiensis, the weekly student newspaper
CPH: College Park Hall, a residence featuring 77 singles and 88 doubles with bathrooms in every unit and dining, fitness and meeting facilities; home to the Campus Safety Department
Declining balance: A debit account that provides funds for use in all Union dining locations and for vending services; money can be added at any time at the Dining Services Office
FYP: Freshman Year Preceptorial. A mandatory interdisciplinary course for first years, led by instructors from a variety of departments; emphasizes critical reading and analytic writing
Dutch Hollow: First-floor dining area in Reamer Campus Center offering soup, salads, pizza, baked goods, wraps, deli sandwiches and more
Minerva House: Hubs for living, learning and leisure activities; all students are assigned to one of seven houses: Beuth, Breazzano, Golub, Green, Messa, Sorum and Wold. Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom, and her likeness appears on the Union seal.
Octopus’s Garden: Union’s organic, community garden, located between McKean and Wells house; food is produced for the College and the community
OTM: Organizing Theme Major for the
student with a well-defined intellectual curiosity in a particular topic involving multiple disciplines
Rathskellar (“Skellar”): A popular
underground grill and pub, located in Old Chapel
SRS: Sophomore Research Seminar, a mandatory program featuring small courses in the sophomore year to promote research and writing skills
Springfest: Annual celebration featuring live music and festival events
Steinmetz Symposium: The Charles Proteus Steinmetz Symposium celebrating student creative, scholarly and research achievement across all disciplines
