The Novel H1N1 influenza virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. Human infections are ongoing in the United States. Most people who have become ill with this virus have recovered without requiring medical treatment. It is likely that the UNM community will experience H1N1 flu in the same proportion as everyone else, probably before vaccinations will be available in the fall.

UNM sporting events and recreational activities offer an inexpensive way for parents to spend time with their students. Athletics Marketing Manager Lisa Romero and Recreational Services Coordinator Eric Boeglin presented the topic at the Aug. 4 Parent Talk.
Students are admitted to most athletic events free. Discounted group and individual tickets are available for parents and extended family. Lobo football is on the horizon and students can purchase up to four general guest tickets for $10 each. Many UNM parents are faculty or staff and will have access to "two for one" season ticket packages.

The news of the death of one of our graduate students in a tragic accident in the mountains above Santa Fe last week has been met with shock, sorrow and regret - the latter because many of us never got to meet Megumi Yamamoto.  By all accounts, she was a fine young woman and an exceptional scholar. Her friends and colleagues in Physics and Astronomy and the Office of International Programs and Studies have honored her with glowing tributes, and we join them in remembering Megumi in our thoughts and prayers.  On behalf of the University, we will be sending condolences to her family in Japan.
