United States Coast Guard Parent Guide
USCGA Event Highlights
Reporting-In Day
Reporting-In Day (or R-Day) is both a beginning and an end. It is a chance to celebrate past accomplishments and reflect on a future of service and tradition. For incoming cadets, it is a day of excitement, nervousness and anticipation. For parents, it is a day of reminiscence, and for all, it is a day of pride. R-Day marks the first day of the timehonored tradition of Swab Summer. This exciting and intense seven-week training period forms the foundation of each cadet’s Academy experience and military career. Honor, respect and devotion to duty are the core values on which Swab Summer is based. Swabs emerge highly motivated and well trained Coast Guard men and women who are ready to join the USCGA Corps of Cadets.
Parents’ Weekend
Whether it is the long-awaited first visit with your 4/c cadet or you are a more seasoned parent coming to spend some extra time with your “firstie” – Parents’ Weekend is a special time for cadets and family members. It is the chance to meet faculty members and Company Officers, to enjoy club receptions, sports events, and a special Saturday Regimental Review or simply to share in the details of your cadet’s daily life – all of which make this an occasion to remember.
Homecoming
Whether it’s just for the football game or to participate in other reunion activities such as the Golf Tournament, Fun Run or Fifty Plus Club Review, alumni converge on campus to rediscover their Academy and reacquaint themselves with the unique USCGA experience.
Graduation
Each May, with four intense yet rewarding years behind them, over 200 men and women transition from cadets to fully commissioned United States Coast Guard officers. On this beautiful spring day, the Coast Guard Academy graduates listen as the very distinguished guests extol their diligence and merit as individuals and distinctions as a class. The newly initiated ensigns accept their commissions furthering their commitment to the Coast Guard’s core values of honor, respect and devotion to duty.
