University of Vermont Reslife Family Guide
Safety
General Campus Safety: To ensure the safety of all our students, we recommend the following guidelines to our on campus residents:
- Lock your door whenever you leave your room and before you go to sleep at night.
- Carry your UVM ID (which is also your swipe card to get into your building) and your room key with you at all times. Do not attach them to each other (if you lose them together, your room can be identified).
- Know your building's evacuation plan.
- If you are out at night, travel in groups and stay in well-lit areas.
- Follow the blue lights! The blue lights around campus identify emergency phones.
Lockouts: Our policy for lockouts allows for students to sign out a loaner key from the front desk (with their student ID) to their room up to three times with no charge. Upon the fourth lockout, a $25 administrative charge will be placed on their student account. If a student loses their key they must notify the main desk as soon as possible so that we can change the locks for security reasons. There is a charge of $55 for a lock change.
Registering Valuables: Registering valuables (computers, bikes, mp3 players, etc.) with the UVM campus police can help them be recovered in the event that they are stolen. Students can find out more about registering valuables with the campus police by going to http://www.uvm.edu/~police/ and clicking on "Prevention Services" in the left menu.
Parking: First year students may not bring a car to campus. For visitors or second year students, parking information can be obtained at: http://www.uvm.edu/~tpswww/
