Vincennes University Parent Guide
Campus Police and Safety
At Vincennes University, we understand your concern for the safety and security of your student while they are away at school. We take seriously our responsibility to promote a campus environment that is safe for all. VU emphasizes crime prevention programs, victim advocacy, improved security measures and enforcement as tools in creating an ideal academic environment conducive to education and personal growth.
We believe that safety is everyone’s responsibility. If anyone sees something suspicious, he or she should report it immediately. Many safety tools are already in place and VU continually assesses crime prevention programs and new technologies to keep your student safe. Resources include camera security systems outside buildings and inside residence halls, emergency call boxes with direct links to campus police, an escort service 24/7, an anonymous reporting tool from the homepage (vinu.edu), to our newest addition, the E-Text Alert System. E-Text is available those with a MyVU web account. Text messages include occasional test messages, emergency notifications including weather-related information, including class cancellations or delays. Students need to register their cell phone number on MyVU.
Furthermore, crime prevention presentations are available upon request and safety tips may be found at the university website or the campus police department. VU publishes crime statistics in an annual VU Campus Police and Safety Report and on the university web site at vinu.edu/studentrighttoknow.
The university police, appointed by the University Board of Trustees are empowered through the Indiana Code, and has jurisdiction on any real property owned or occupied by the University or on any streets through or adjacent thereto. The department shares jurisdiction in the city of Vincennes through an agreement with its Chief of Police.
