At WKU, you can be sure your student’s Advisor will listen carefully and attend to each of his/her needs. Each Advisor follows The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) goals for academic advising:

  • development of suitable educational plans;
  • clarification of career and life goals;
  • selection of appropriate courses and other educational experiences;
  • interpretation of institutional requirements;
  • enhancement of student awareness about educational resources available
  • (e.g., internships, study abroad, honors, and learning assistance programs);
  • evaluation of student progress toward established goals;
  • development of decision making skills;
  • reinforcement of student self direction
  • referral to and use of institutional and community support services; and
  • collection and distribution of data regarding student needs, preferences, and performance for use in making institutional decisions and policy.

It is the student’s responsibility to :

  • Know the name and office location of his/her advisor.
  • Schedule appointments with the advisor and is on time for those appointments.
  • Has and is familiar with the undergraduate catalog and semester schedule bulletin.
  • Is prepared for each advisement session (has identified questions or concerns, brings a list of proposed courses and times to an advance registration appointment).
  • Discuss long-range goals including choice of major and career aspirations.
  • Know academic requirements for continued enrollment and graduation.
  • Ask questions about policies, procedures, or requirements that are not understood.
  • Obtain, complete and process all necessary forms with signatures required for registration, schedule changes and degree program within specified deadlines.

  • Consult with the advisor before changing an agreed-upon selection of courses.
  • Consult with the advisor with concerns related to academic progress, a change in program, courses to be taken at another institution, withdrawal from courses and withdrawal from the university.
  • Make final decisions and is actively responsible for his/her academic career.
  • Keep copies of his/her relevant academic records.

Located in the Student Success Center in the Downing University Center Annex, this office has a staff of six professionals and 15 student tutors.  Academic Advising assists generally undeclared students in registering for classes, as well as assisting Academic Transition Program (ATP) in registering first year students for their first semester of college.  This office is also the home of the TOPS, STEPS, and PARTNER programs.  A part of this office, The Learning Center, offers free tutoring for any student in several general education areas.
