Many important decisions and challenging situations confront students while they are at college. They will need to make decisions regarding courses, curricula, and career planning. They may become involved in social and personal situations that leave them feeling confused and upset. In addition, it may be likely that the inherent stresses of university life will, at some time, interfere with academic achievement and personal growth. The University Counseling and Testing Center (UCTC), a department within the Division of Student Affairs, exists to help students deal effectively with such concerns.

Counseling and Testing Center services are intended to help people deal productively with concerns, issues, or problems that confront today’s students. Sometimes simply sharing thoughts and feelings in confidence with someone who is objective and a good listener can be helpful for students facing important decisions and/or life difficulties. At other times, counseling involves providing a student with, or directing them to, certain types of information and then helping them understand that information in relationship to their situation. UCTC assists students with a variety of issues including:

  • Academic direction and goals
  • Major and/or curriculum choice
  • Self-confidence
  • Assertion
  • Loneliness
  • Coping with stress
  • Depression and/or anxiety
  • Coping with a death or other losses
  • Career goals
  • Traumatic stress
  • Concerns regarding sexuality
  • Interpersonal problems
  • Eating disorders
  • Substance abuse

UCTC is staffed with professionally licensed counselors and psychologists. Both personal and career counseling assistance is available free of charge to all actively enrolled students at Western Michigan University. UCTC faculty are also available to consult with students and parents when they have questions or concerns. UCTC is on the first floor of the Faunce Student Services building (also known as the “birdcage”).
