Studying tropical biology in Belize, engineering in China, management in Australia or political science in South Africa are a few of the study abroad options students can learn about at Western Michigan University’s Study Abroad office in the Haenicke Institute for Global Education.

Studying abroad allows students to earn academic credit toward their degrees while gaining cultural understanding of a country. Foreign language students can greatly advance their speaking and reading skills through a language-intensive study abroad program. Many WMU study abroad students, upon returning home, describe their overseas experience as life-transforming—personally and intellectually.

WMU offers more than 60 programs in 30-plus countries, including short-term, faculty-led programs. Students may also complete an internship or volunteer for credit. Financial aid can be applied to study abroad programs and numerous scholarships are available, including the President’s Grant for Study Abroad, supported by an endowment that offers up to $11,000 for students planning to study a foreign language overseas.

The WMU Study Abroad office is located in Ellsworth Hall. Information sessions and walk-in advising are available Monday-Friday.
