Care Packages 101
One thing that almost any college student will tell you is that they love getting a care package from home! A student will verify that a text, IM, e-mail or phone call is very nice, but getting something that isn’t a bill or credit card application in the mail will brighten their day. As a way of getting your student to brag about you to friends on campus, here are some things to consider when sending care packages to your student:
- Homemade is often the best! Students miss that taste of home when coming to WOU.
- Slip in some spending money and insist it is spent on something enjoyable. This may alleviate any guilt the student will have that the money should go towards books, etc. A gift card to a local merchant may also be welcomed!
- Write a note or enclose a card.
- Decorate the package.
- Include small things that the student may enjoy – coffee/cocoa, stationary, school supplies, magazines, newspapers from your hometown, etc.
- Make them thematic! If it is close to Halloween, include spooky goodies and such!
- Remember what your student can and cannot have in residence hall rooms – no candles!
- Include enough so that the student can share goodies with roommates and neighbors.
- Make the gift a surprise when you can!
Just remember that if you are giving care packages, nothing should be sent that could spoil through the mail. Make the effort a family affair – include siblings and other family members in contributing to the care package! If you want other ideas, you can also send special occasion gifts through WOU’s Parents Club program.
