Steve Aoki is more than just a musician and a producer—he is an activist too. Already known for promoting more inclusiveness across the music landscape, now he is venturing out and encouraging people—students specifically—to make diversity and inclusion a part of their everyday life and decisions, per a recent press release. According to CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, “Experts tell us that our unconscious mind makes the majority of our decisions. It creates blind spots or unconscious biases that can narrow your vision of others and potentially influence your behaviors.”
How is Aoki working to try and facilitate this change? He has joined forces with the CEO Action Check Your Blind Spots tour.
CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion describes the tour as such: “The Check Your Blind Spots mobile tour is designed to give people the opportunity to learn about and explore ways to mitigate unconscious bias in their everyday lives. Through a series of immersive and interactive elements, participants are exposed to the nuances of unconscious bias, and also have the
chance to sign the I Act On pledge to address personal biases and drive inclusive behaviors.”
Aoki participated in the tour by performing for a select crowd of University of Wisconsin-Madison students just last week on May 1, kicking off the month of May. How were these students selected for admission to the performance? They were being rewarded for their openness to change their way of thinking and their willingness to learn more about starting meaningful
conversations about diversity and bringing inclusion in their daily interactions through the I Act On pledge.
The pledge reads as follows: “I pledge to check my bias, speak up for others and show up for all.”
