Launched in 2010, GoFundMe is “the world’s largest online fundraising platform, with over $3 billion raised so far.” A community of more than 25 million donors helps GoFundMe change the way the world gives to those in need.
And this week, they followed through on that mission by announcing the 10 winners of the first GoFundMe Scholarship program, giving a total of $100,000 split evenly towards their education and to pay for college expenses, according to a recent press release.
More than $100 million has been raised on GoFundMe over the last two years for education related campaigns, making it the fastest growing category on the platform.
“We’re proud and excited to help these remarkable, determined students achieve their educational dreams,” said Rob Solomon, GoFundMe CEO, in the release. “All of us here have been touched by the stories shared by the scholarship winners, and we can’t wait to see how they’ll continue to give back to their communities.”
The winners came from all over the country and each have their own individual dreams and paths to follow but all experienced hardship in their life—and managed not to let it get in the way of their pursuit of an education.
The winners include Aubriana Mency, Pauline Muturi, Emettra Nelson, Amir Fluellen, Alyssa Wray, Alan Gonez, Bezaleel (Bez) Balan, Sandy Gonzalez, Mayia Vranas, and Thayne Yazzie. Read their stories here.
