Whether your student is showing signs of homesickness or barely pausing to send you a cheerful text message between great classes and new friends, a package from home can be a fantastic surprise. Send your student some TLC in package form.

Here are five fun care package themes, plus hints for putting together a care package that will be the envy of the residence hall.

Winter Wonderland: Fend of winter’s coming chill with a hat, mittens or fingerless gloves, comfy slippers or thick colorful socks, hot chocolate or tea, travel mug, Vitamin C supplement drops, healthy snacks, pocket tissues packs

Sports Season: Athletic socks, other apparel for the sport, energy bars, water bottle, jump rope, string bag for carrying stuff to the gym

QuoteOur top tip for putting together a prize-winning care package and having fun in the process: host a care package party.

Movie/Game Night: Classic DVDs, microwave popcorn, movie-style candy, fleece throw blanket, playing cards, travel-sized versions of favorite board games

School Supply Restock: Pens and pencils, notepads, envelopes and stamps, file folders, Post-it notes in fun shapes and colors, mini stapler, Scotch tape, batteries

Spring Fever: Flip flops, sunglasses, sun block, beach towel, water bottle, Frisbee or Hacky Sack, kite

The time is always right for a care package. Birthdays and holidays are a natural, plus the week before midterms or finals. A few more tips:

  • Send less stuff, more often
  • Get more bang for your buck — use flat-rate USPS boxes
  • Stuff corners with a new scarf, T-shirt or socks
  • Include a handwritten letter or card
  • A real photo is a treat — frame it!
  • Gift cards are handy (iTunes, Amazon, gas, coffee, food, movies)
  • Food, always
