Is your student a vice president of a Phi Kappa Phi chapter?
Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi is currently accepting applications for their 2017 Student Vice President Leadership Summit, according to a recent press release. The Summit will take place in Denver, Colorado from July 13-16.
Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 and is the country’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic majors. It inducts about 30,000 students, faculty, and other professional staff annually, and there are chapters at more than 300 colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines.
Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and the top 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have accomplished scholarly distinction also qualify for membership. The Society’s mission is “To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.”
This will be the third year the Summit occurs, and the two-day event unites student vice presidents from Phi Kappa Phi chapters across the country to participate in activities aiming to strengthen and develop leadership skills. Those who attend the Summit also have the chance to connect and network with other student vice presidents and learn strategies that can help advance Phi Kappa Phi chapters.
“I cannot stress enough how beneficial this Summit was for me,” said previous Summit attendee Jaime Staengel. “The ability to hear what other chapters are doing or have done to improve was valuable, and I took some ideas away that I plan to implement at Murray State University.”
The application deadline for the Summit is May 15. Nominations are limited to one student vice president per Phi Kappa Phi chapter. To qualify to attend the Summit, students have to be an active member of Phi Kappa Phi and currently serve as a student VP in their chapter. Applicants must also be returning to campus as a full-time student for the 2017-2018 academic year.
Since being established in 2013, the Student Vice President Leadership Summit has been held every other year and more than 125 students have attended the event. To learn more about the Summit and download an application, go to www.phikappaphi.org/summit.
