Now that school is back in session and fall is right around the corner, your student will no doubt be thinking of their autumn wardrobe and assessing what they have and what they need to add. While there’s no need for you to buy them everything they think they must have, here are some of the fashion items they will actually need for school this fall.

Jeans

Jeans are many college students’ go-to item of clothing and having a few pairs that fit well is essential. They don’t need to be designer jeans, just the right size and cut to be versatile enough to wear throughout the year with various shirts and taper well into different shoes. Of course, nowadays many girls opt for leggings daily but when the weather starts getting colder, it’s good to have a thicker pant like a pair of jeans to wear as they will offer more protection.

Boots, Boots, Boots

Boots are a college must-have, and depending on where your student goes to school, they may need a few different kinds. Rain boots are super useful and utilized through many seasons so your student will want to invest in a durable and waterproof pair. Additionally, snow boots are a necessity if your student goes to school somewhere winter hits hard, and it’s a good idea to start shopping for those early so you and your student can do ample research to find the best pair for the best price.

For girls, riding boots or some other kind of fall boot is also a fashion must-have for fall as basically every other girl on campus will be wearing them.

Scarves

Scarves are the perfect fashion accessory to help make outfits look different, thereby expanding your student’s wardrobe inexpensively. Plus, when the weather does start really getting cooler, scarves will help keep your student warm as they walk to class. Since scarves come in many different styles, patterns, colors, etc., your student will want to purchase a range so they have the perfect one for whatever outfit and weather. Luckily, scarves can be bought for pretty cheap from places like Forever21, Amazon, Charlotte Russe, Target, Wal-Mart, and other stores as well.

Cardigans, Jackets, & Sweaters

As the temperature starts dropping, your student will want to start layering, and some wardrobe must-haves for fall are cardigans, jackets, and sweaters. They may need to invest in a few different kinds of jackets, such as denim, utility, leather, etc., in addition to a rain jacket and fleece zip-up. Cardigan and sweater-wise, there are varying lengths, materials, and weights, and they can be used in winter as well and paired with jeans or leggings and boots.

Spirit Wear

A college student isn’t really a college student until they have school spirit wear in their wardrobe. Whether it’s a T-shirt, sweatshirt, tank, sweatpants, jersey, sweatpants, etc., spirit wear is a fashion necessity when at university as many students opt to wear spirit wear daily to class and to sports games too. Your student will want to show their school spirit but they don’t need to stock up on every single type of school gear right away – instead, they can build their college apparel slowly, and hunt for special offers or deals from the campus bookstore or other collegiate clothing sellers to get the most for their money.

Flannel Shirts

Flannel shirts are another useful fashion item handy for layering and wearing when the temperature is not too hot or cold yet. Sometimes it’s too hot for a jacket or the weather requires a jacket and some other layer, too. Flannels are widespread on campuses as they easily pair up with a vest, jeans or leggings, and boots, and are easy to just toss on over a lighter weight shirt or wear buttoned up by itself.

Watch

While not everyone likes to wear a watch, your student should consider adding one to his or her accessories. Not only can watches make a fashion statement, but they’re useful for those times your student needs to know the time and for whatever reason can’t access or look at their phone. Walking to classes, it’s helpful to know how much time is left before the class starts and when the weather is colder, your student may not have pockets or want to have their phone out in the elements during their walk to class.

Tote Bag

Besides a backpack that’s suitable for everyday use, a tote bag comes in handy at college, too, for those times when a backpack isn’t needed or is too bulky and a cross-body purse is too small. Tote bags should be big enough to carry a laptop or tablet as well as some other items but not overly large or cumbersome.

While by no means an exhaustive list, these are just some of the fashion items your student might need or find useful for school this fall — happy shopping!
