6 Tips For Staying Safe On-Campus

Safety is a concern for every college parent. No matter where your son or daughter is in their college career, it is important to have a discussion about on-campus safety.

Here are 6 tips to share with your son or daughter to stay safe on-campus:

1) Know where you are going.

No matter where you are going, having a clear route in mind is helpful. Make sure you look at a GPS route before you leave a building. This will also help avoid looking confused and instead, you will look confident.

2) Do not wear headphones.

Especially at night, do not wear headphones. This lowers your awareness of your surroundings. You’re much more likely to hear any suspicious noises if you’re not wearing headphones.

3) Get to know your Campus’ Safety Office.

Many colleges and universities have offices to help students become familiar with the safety features on campus. For example, my daughter’s university has blue light emergency phone stations, and an option for an escort home.

4) Use well-lit paths at night.

This tip goes hand in hand with tip one. When you are looking at what route to take home, see if it is near a main road that will be well-lit or well-populated. Crimes are much less likely to happen in these areas.

5) Know your alcohol limit.

It is dangerous to walk – especially at night – if your senses are lowered by alcohol. Stay safe at off-campus parties by not drinking too much and knowing your limit. If you and your friends are driving at all, establish a designated driver (DD) or take an Uber or Lyft. (If you haven’t had a talk with your student about drinking limits, here are some tips for that conversation.)

6) Have Revolar with you.

Purchase Revolar Here

If you don’t have a Revolar, it’s time to invest. Parents say that, “It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.” My daughter has told me she even puts it in her hand when walking around campus at night just because of the confidence it gives her that help is just a click away. Here are some tips on how to make Revolar worth every cent! It was the best investment my family made for my kids.

It’s important to have these talks with your son or daughter. Not only will it help you feel better, but it may give them more ideas for campus safety.
