Banking and Financial Services
Your student may find it more convenient to open a bank account at a financial institution in Tuscaloosa rather than have difficulty depositing and cashing out-of-town checks. While several banking institutions are located in the city of Tuscaloosa, the Alabama Credit Union is the on-campus financial institution for University of Alabama students, faculty, and staff.
The Alabama Credit Union offers UA students free checking accounts with debit card services, extensive branch and ATM networks around campus and the city of Tuscaloosa (including a branch and ATM services located in the Ferguson Center), 24-hour online account access for both parents and students, credit card services, as well as a branch network of over 37,000 locations nationwide through the Credit Union Service Center Network.
There are many banking options available for your student. As you evaluate which financial options are best for your student, keep the following factors in mind:
- ATM fees – select an institution that has ATM’s located conveniently around the campus and in the area of town your student will reside.
- Monthly fees – many checking accounts charge per-check or per-ATM withdraw fees; others charge monthly fees for checking and savings accounts.
- Financial counseling – some banking institutions are committed to helping students make sound financial decisions including no-fee counseling when necessary.
- Reasonable credit limits – select an institution that only offers your student credit cards with modest limits so as to avoid future financial problems.
