Winter Break Information

Residence halls close at 8 p.m. on Friday, December 13th and reopen at 8 a.m. on Sunday, January 12th. Students whose exams end earlier in the week are expected to vacate their residence hall within 24 hours of their last exam.

Late stays and break stays: Students who need to stay past the 8 p.m. closing can make an online request to stay one extra night at no additional charge, but must be out by 10 a.m. the following morning (Saturday, December 14th).

We offer academic break housing in Living/Learning, Harris/Millis, Marsh/Austin/Tupper, and the Cottages. Students who register for break housing must stay in one of those halls between Saturday, December 14th and Saturday, January 11th at a flat rate of $90 per week or $320 for the entire winter break. Students who do not live in an academic break area must find someone who does, and is willing to “lend” their room.

Anyone who would like to return to campus before the halls reopen on January 12th must sign up and pay for break housing as noted above. ResLife staff will be on duty during break to supervise the break housing areas.

During the break, residents won’t have access to their building, so it’s important they remember to take with them everything they might need, such as passports, cell phones, etc. Residents should sign the room checkout sheet posted on their door and follow all instructions from their RA.

For this long break, we remind students:

  • refrigerators should be emptied/unplugged, and the fridge door left open.
  • To avoid any cold-weather-related flooding problems due to burst pipes, all fans should be removed from windows, which should be closed and locked.

After halls close, ResLife staff will enter rooms to ensure that all safety guidelines have been met. Any policy violations will be documented and referred through the student conduct process.

Students who are going abroad or otherwise not returning to UVM should contact their office manager prior to leaving. Even though they may have informed their college, they’ll still need to fill out a ResLife cancellation form to confirm they’ve removed all belongings, and return their room key (to avoid a $55 key charge).

Students whose roommates are leaving UVM can request to pull in a friend. They should contact their office manager before leaving campus to request the space be held for the friend, who must be currently living on campus. If approved, they will be able to move when halls reopen in January. This applies to students in half-filled doubles only. Sorry, no spaces can be held in completely vacant rooms. Over break, all vacant spaces in half-filled doubles and associated shared bathrooms will be cleaned to prepare for new residents. Anyone in a half-filled double must leave half the room available to an incoming student. All personal belongings must be removed from shared bathrooms.

Residents of rooms or suites that are not left in good condition will be billed for any necessary extra cleaning/prep/moving charges.

Don’t let the bedbugs bite. We remind our students traveling during the break to be on the lookout for bedbugs. We ask them to check their belongings before returning to campus to ensure they don’t bring back unwanted “guests”. Read more about bedbugs.
